Melissa Morgan and Diane Clarke - Invocation to Isis

Stole this one from a thrift store back in 2010 or 2011. Picked it up for the artwork.
Instrumental music for flute and harp played by two ladies, presumably from San Diego. The tracks are pretty good in a quiet mystical type of way, the thing you might expect for some movie soundtrack or something. It might be overly contemplative and a bit moody, but generally pretty good.
My  only real problem with this is the baby sounds on track 2, but we can just skip that now with MP3 technology. When I just had this on cassette it served as a bad reminder or poor association and resulted in fewer plays, but let's not make a deal of it okay.

Jessica Williams - Awakening

I know nothing about her. She might be slightly famous in the modern jazz world, or be a nobody who made one good album. Who knows? I found this in someone's yard along with a copy of Philip Glass' North Star in Sacramento where this was recorded in CE 1989 November. This is a very relaxed album with extended monothematic works. Kind of generic jazz names like Awakening and Pangaea. This may be unwarranted, but I always sensed a slight lesbianic sentiment for Elaine on the part of Jessica. Not sure if the painting on the cover reinforces that or not. . ..

Zao - Shekina

Third Zao album. The band completes the string section and has a full quartet on this album. This isn't always apparent, but comes out here and there. There is a nice extended section with just the quartet on Zohar. This album is on par with Osiris, but has low moments like Yen-Lang and Zita that make it not quite as good. Fewer vocals on this one and only Yochk'o Seffer sings. This has my favorite cover art of theirs

Zao - Osiris

This is absolutely essential listening. Zao were the best band of France's Zuehl scene, some marks better than Magma, I would say. That being a pure musical enjoyability level anyway. Like most bands of the scene Zao has two Magma transplants, being Yochk'o Seffer and Francois Cahen.
One further Magma comparison comes from the emblematic album cover art approach, however, once again Zao succeeds in out doing Magma.

This is the best album. It's pretty much all here. Yochk'o Seffer's excellent saxophone and vocals, Francois Cahen's Keyboards, dynamic sensibility, electric violin, Joel Dugrenot's baritone vocals, worthy musicianship from all members, present and contributing bass, exciting drumming, interesting arrangements, melodies, rhythms, and textures (tonalities/sounds), chaos, harmony, vocals in a language no one knows or understands if in any language at all, et cetera, and et cetera.

As far as the language goes, I always figured it allowed the vocals to be an extension of melody and let the voice act purely as an instrument without meaning outside of it's sonorous qualities. This is important; we don't get non-musical concepts infiltrating our musical experience. Too often there is nothing to say anyway, and what would a one have to say over something like this?

Generally this is high energy music, but there are plenty of low down times, such as the majority of Isis and all of La Rhune. Yog is the stand out and Shardaz is another great number.

One non-album track is provided you. Montreal. It's decent and is one of those sustained melody tracks that goes on little under 12 minutes. That sounds like La Rhune, actually. The difference is La Rhune is about a 1/3 as long and has less of a concentration on keyboard performance. Montreal is softer and more light-hearted than the album's initial closer. Female vocals on this one. I have wondered for sometime if the vocalist here is the same as the one from Zao's first, Z=7L, no clue on that however.

Beware: this is the same version that's been floating out there for some time and has a bass heavy mix and an error about 2 and 1/2 minuets in to Isis. I have offered you the best I can.

A, mostly, low-intensity album leaning more toward the quiet reverb drenched approach that makes 70's abstract jazzness as awesome as it is. Braxton has a band with him, unlike during his solo appearance on For Alto, in fact this is the same band from Conference of the Birds except Kenny Wheeler replaces Sam Rivers.

Bobby Hutcherson - Components

This is Hutcherson's second album released as leader. Hancock and Joe Chambers from Oblique are here as well as Freddie Hubbard, James Spaulding, and Ron Carter. The addition of the horns set this one appart from Oblique. Album is divided into two halves. The first written by Hutcherson, the more abstract second half by percussionist Joe Chambers.

The opening title track is very good, a favorite.

Essential Jazz here. Liberated sounding (Free), but there is organization and unification of the members. David Holland is the bassist and leader. Anthony Braxton is here again, playing reeds and flute with Sam Rivers while Barry Altschul plays the percussion.

More Saxyphone here—with accompaniment this time. This is one of those Yoshida Tatsuya albums, plenty of those around, but this one stood out a bit more to me than most of the others. This is a Ruins spinoff so it's just Yoshida on drums and a sax named Ono Ryoko. There are many overdubs on the sax, which is kind of makes this interesting.

Anthony Braxton - For Alto

Moving jazzward. This is a fun 73 minutes of solo saxophone performances by one of the best. The double LP here has Braxton going all out on his alto saxophone with songs ranging from 20 minuets to 45 seconds and all dedicated to various people, mostly other musicians. Braxton made the recordings in CE 1969 and this came out the following year.

No I will not be posting the whole X series, not yet if ever..
So this is where things are at their best. This is CE 2001—no NES or SNES sounds. This almost passes as real music. Definitely the prime as far as song content and all that goes, though I do rather like the soundtrack the first one. . .

Mega Man X

Here we go, back on track. This is a fresh approach. Based not so much on failing or doing not so good, or rehashing, or any such things. X (not to be confused with 10) is for SNES and its sound parameters are based on that hardware setup. Most of the songs hold up rather well (is it from hearing them so many times? They do repeat endlessly), though some more than others (obviously).

Mega Man 7. Mega Man 8, Mega Man 9

Megamen 7, 8, and 9 are here. Overall this is a little less good than the previous installment. 7 being on SNES has more 'realistic' instrument voices. 8 sees a bit more of a fusion orientation and some remixes of previous songs and getting far away from the comforting NES sound by using playstation technologies. This doesn't work out so well really. 9, from CE 2008, is more of a fallback to the NES style, but with a more polished sound. It is the best one of the three, I guess.

The sounds are touched up a bit and lack the feel-good textures of the NES music, but I guess this is okay. Not really prime material though.

No, I have never played any of these games. . .

These are the last three Mega Men for the NES. Still good stuff here, but not as essential. Sound quality has changed little, which is for the best.

Tomita Isao (冨田勲) - The Bermuda Triangle

Tomita is pretty legendary among synthysizer peoples. The approach is pretty much take good / decent classical music (Debussy, Mussorgsky, et cetera) and put a late 20th century edge to it. Other people did this too and Tomita wasn't really the first, but his albums are pretty well regarded and fondly remembered.
The Bermuda Triangle has Tomita working some Prokofiev pieces with a little bit of his Sibelius, John Williams, and his own mixed in. Not as straightforward as say Snowflakes are Dancing, his first album, more of an atmospheric quality. Dynamic.
This came in a cool pink or blue vinyl of which I will provide no pictures, though I suppose in the distant future I could, but even thinking of this seems rather pointless, like so many other things.

Jack DeJohnette - Pictures

Jack DeJohnette.
Drummer. American. Jazz guy. Played with a bunch of notable jazzers (Miles Davis; Chick Corea; Keith Jarrett; you know, those kinda guys). He is still alive after more than seventy years in this world.

Pictures.
This is a cassette rip. 1977. A few 'Pictures' Jack made with a little help from his pal John Ambercrombie (Guitars). DeJohnette himself plays the drums as well as piano and organ and is solo on most of the tracks. Things get a bit 'abstract,' but nothing too far out. This comes from the ECM label, which produced some of the best noisy, chaotic, awesome jazz there was during the 70's.

Pekka Pohjola - Harakka Bialoipokku (B the Magpie)

Pohjola, Pekka. Finland. Bassist. Multi-instrumentalist. I guess he has prog roots and was in the band Wigwam.
This album is his no. 2 and my favorite. It has—along with some of the songs from some of his other albums—an odd European folk like sound that I can't do too well in the way of the explanation. Think East-ish Europe, but don't do too much consideration, please.
This could be filed as a type of fusion music, you know like jazziness.
There is a lot of repetition used here and is characteristic of his style.

Tosca Tango Orchestra - Waking Life Soundrack

"Orchestra" from Texas, Austin.
Tango at times I suppose (Duh), classical at others—notably Chopin's Nocturne No. 2 in E-flat major, Op.9—but overall very moody, fitting for the film. The film is a set of dreams featuring monologs as well as dialog, even some scenes with no words. Thoughtful subjects. Animated. This is an interesting film worth checking out if you can. Even the band makes an appearance in the film.
As a soundtrack this is great, good consistency of theme. As music more generally this holds up too, a few weak spots, I feel, but these are few and nothing bad at all.
The best part of all of this is the accordion.

See previous post. . . this is (primarily) Issei Norro's jazz fusion group, very famous in Japan.

Super Flight.
Album the second. Late '79. Same band as the first album, similar style, still less funky, more jazzy. Norro plays a bit of fretless guitar. The first 3 songs make a strong opening, mostly good throughout. I Love New York is a bit more divisive, but I think it's okay—funny.

Japan's most famous early fusion band (probably)! Notable musicians include Issei Noro and Akira Jimbo (Not featured on this album). Aside from 2006-2012, they have been active since 1976.

First and best album. More intensity than on the albums to follow. There is less preoccupation on disco/funk/pop or whatever it is they evolved into. This is good. Space Road is a classic and Swallow is a great song too, an example of the "intensity" aforementioned. All the instruments are very strong

on this release.

Complete Preludes and Nocturnes.
Op. 28 is the well known piece here, rightfully so. Some very great piano work. Op. 28, like the previous Bach piece, is also in all 24 keys, major and minor. The Nocturnes I am less familiar with, but are also good. Nos. 2 and 3 may be familiar to you. This is the piano work of Garrick Ohlsson, I think he does a good job, how about you?

Solo piano. Completed by Bach in 1722. 24 Preludes coupled with 24 fugues in each of the conventional keys. Some are well known, such as Prelude no. 1 in C major, while others are lesser known and considerably better—one might think of Prelude and Fugue no. 19 in A major. The piano on this album is here performed by Fredrich Gulda.

"Friedrich Gulda (FG): FG, who was an Austrian pianist that published both Beethoven's 32 and JSBs 48 in early days of the modern recording industry, has left behind a very consistent interpretation of the WTC, to which one has to get used to, but, once this is accomplished, which provides a very deep insight into the works. FGs approach is to use a very dry piano sound and to bank on his precise technique, which enables him to ;nail' certain passages that often get blurred with other performers. However, he also has a very subtle and almost "considerate" tone when it comes to some of the slower and more thoughtful pieces, which makes their interpretation equally convincing."

Title song is pretty rocking, being focused primarily on a drum beat with added variations, it's good. The rest of the album falls into something of an 'alright' category. I must say this is not really phenomenal work.

The Atlantics.
Australian surf rock band from Sydney. They go a little more out than other surf bands I've heard. Nice guitar work from these gentlemen.

Bombora.
This is the best surf album I've yet heard, better than anything by the Ventures (Yes, even In Space). The title track is really the only thing they were known for, I'm pretty sure.

First album. 1981. This is her best album I've heard. The atmospheric elements work good here. Her other albums have kind of scared me, reason: much different.
This is a bit darker than Aunt Sally's album and more experimental as well.

Aunt Sally.
Japanese band. Don't know much of them. Sometimes punkish, usually not. Usually dark in atmosphere, sometimes not. Most songs are short. The only member that seems to have any kind of recognition is vocalist Phew.

the soldier, his wife and the bum

I was a bum in San Francisco but once managed

to go to a symphony concert along with the well-

dressed people

and the music was good but something about the

audience was not

and something about the orchestra

and the conductor was

not,

although the building was fine and the

acoustics perfect

I preferred to listen to the music alone

on my radio

and afterwards I did go back to my room and I

turned on the radio but

then there was a pounding on the wall:

"SHUT THAT GOD-DAMNED THING OFF!"

there was a soldier in the next room

living with his wife

and he would soon be going over there to pro-

tect me from Hitler so

I snapped the radio off and then heard his

wife say, "you shouldn't have done that."

and the soldier said, "FUCK THAT GUY!"

which I thought was a very nice thing for him

to tell his wife to do.

of course,

she never did.

anyhow, I never went to another live concert

and that night I listened to the radio very

quietly, my ear pressed to the

speaker.

war has its price and peace never lasts and

millions of young men everywhere would die

and as I listened to the classical music I

heard them making love, desperately and

mournfully, through Shostakovich, Brahms,

Mozart, through crescendo and climax,

and through the shared

wail of our darkness.
